Chapter 11 Tourism and Recreation

The derelict HSE site  opposite the Catholic church in Carnew should be bought. We have a plan to build a replica traditional cottage from circa 1847 on this site . Thousands of men, women and children from this area left their small holdings and had their boat fair paid for by Lord Fitzwilliam of Coolattin as part of the land clearance during the Famine. They made their way to Newross in Co.Wexford and sailed to Canada. This is an opportunity to create something unique in this part of  Ireland, to my knowledge there's only two such sites in Ireland, Donegal and Kerry. We hope to optain funding from Board Failte and the Canadian diaspora of which a local historian has estimated there to be in excess of 300,000 now living in Canada and North America.
