Chapter 7 Community Development
A walking heritage trail from Carnew to Shillelagh via Tomacork should be developed. This would be a great addition for the local community and also would be a great addition for attracting tourism.
Pride in Carnew committee are interested in the development of our community in order to make it a safe and healthy place to live and work in. As a committee we are dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the built and natural heritage of our Town and surrounding area. We work very closely with Tidy Town's, Christmas lights, South Wicklow Drama Festival, Carnew Musical, Carnew Heritage, The Back Alley Committee.
A walking heritage trail from Carnew to Shillelagh via Tomacork should be developed. This would be a great addition for the local community and also would be a great addition for attracting tourism.
The main street in Carnew should be have the street lights replaced with new old style LED with plug in sockets for putting up Christmas lights . Also the footpaths should be reduced in width in order for slanted parking to solve the problem of traffic congestion.
Carry out long overdue repair work on the uplights in the footpath outside of the Castle Wall.
Carnew has water infrastructure to allow for sustainable housing development and as a large housing development is needed to cope with the large number of people looking for housing . Carnew is a growing town with one of the largest secondary schools in the County. A busy Mart and factories that employe many people. The town needs sustainable housing development . We propose that all existing zoned land for housing in Carnew be retained and new land for building should be identified.
The Castle in Carnew should be bought under a CPO and developed and opened up opened up to public. This would be a massive boost for tourism to Carnew and the surrounding areas whilst ensuring that the Castle and it's Heritage would be protected for generations to come.
The derelict HSE site opposite the Catholic church in Carnew should be bought. We have a plan to build a replica traditional cottage from circa 1847 on this site . Thousands of men, women and children from this area left their small holdings and had their boat fair paid for by Lord Fitzwilliam of Coolattin as part of the land clearance during the Famine. They made their way to Newross in Co.Wexford and sailed to Canada. This is an opportunity to create something unique in this part of Ireland, to my knowledge there's only two such sites in Ireland, Donegal and Kerry. We hope to optain funding from Board Failte and the Canadian diaspora of which a local historian has estimated there to be in excess of 300,000 now living in Canada and North America.
